Duromine and other weight loss drugs. Risks, side effects and whole health impacts with Dr. John Sykes

In this week’s episode, I am joined by Dr. John Sykes to discuss the health impacts of Duromine and other weight loss drugs. John is a general practitioner who trained in medicine in the UK. He is one of the trustees of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, a fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, and is also a certified nutritionist. I am often asked for my opinion on weight loss drugs such as Duromine and whether they have a place in healthcare, so I have invited John onto the podcast to explore this topic further with me and share his expertise in this space.

We discuss:

  • How regularly patients request and are being prescribed weight loss medications (7:44)

  • Risk vs reward. In what scenarios might weight loss medications be prescribed vs not prescribed (13:37)

  • Are helping people by prescribing weight loss medication or just fuelling diet culture (24:00)

  • What is Duromine? How does it work? (25:50)

  • What does it feel like when you take Duromine? Are there any similarities to amphetamines? (27:30)

  • Side effects of Duromine (30:48)

  • The risks associated with taking Duromine (37:50)

  • Are there best practice recommendations for doctors to refer patients to a dietitian when prescribing weight loss medication? (41:33)

  • Other weight-loss drugs such as Saxenda...are they any better? (43:22)

  • Fat burners and caffeine in relation to weight loss and health (48:30)
